What Is Fistula?

02/19/2025

A fistula is something most women in America will never once hear about, much less experience. It is a condition that occurs during childbirth in which the birth canal rips open inside either into the bladder or the rectum or both, causing continual leakage and incontinence. This often develops from obstructed labors, where a baby may sit in the birth canal for days, die there, and begin to deteriorate, causing a whole the vagina. Early marriage of girls not fully grown is a main cause for this, as well as traditions and cultures keeping girls away from professional help. A girl that develops a fistula is usually rejected by her husband, family and community partly because of the horrible odor that follows her.

But there is hope! Surgery is offered and is quite successful in most cases.
